The type of attitude you have can seriously impact your performance whether it be in a positive or negative way, but it can be especially detrimental if you have the wrong attitude. Therefore it is vital, especially in the current climate, that you develop an attitude for altitude and change your life.
It has been shown that optimists get paid more and live longer, healthier and happier lives than pessimists. So developing a positive attitude and thinking in a more positive way will help you to experience a happy life.
W. Clement Stone once stated “There’s very little difference in people. But that little difference makes a big difference. The little difference is attitude. The big difference is whether it’s positive or negative.”
Pay Attention To Your Thoughts
There is a split second between your thought and the way you react to it. If you can begin to notice whether your thoughts are positive or negative you can learn to control them and train yourself to react differently to those thoughts. Over time, with a small amount of effort and regular practice on your part you can turn it into an automatic habit.
Having a positive attitude has many benefits. It energises you and brings out your true potential. As many as 9 out of 10 people prefer to work in an environment with positive people, and say that they are more productive as a result of it. It makes for a more congenial atmosphere and helps lift the energy of everyone around them.
A positive attitude helps to reduce stress, improves the quality of your work and encourages teamwork. It’s also important if you work in a business that deals directly with customers, as a negative employee can scare off customers if they have the wrong attitude.
Solving your customers issues in an amiable and positive manner will make them happy customers. This will in turn lead them to becoming loyal customers so it makes perfect business sense to keep your customers happy. Can you see how developing an attitude for altitude and changing your life could be of benefit to you?
There are 3 factors that determine our attitude. These are environment, experience and education.
Environment
The attitude you develop from your environment comes from your home, your school, your cultural and religious background. It can also come from the traditions and beliefs that have been passed down within your family. All of these environments create a culture which determines how positive or negative your attitude is. Being surrounded by mostly positive family and peers will most likely mean that you will also possess a positive attitude. Whereas if you are surrounded by mostly negative family and peers then you will more than likely possess a negative attitude.
Experience
As you go through life there will be experiences that you encounter that will have an effect on your attitude. The more positive experiences that you have with people as you grow up and go on your journey through life the more positive your attitude will be. Alternatively, the more negative experiences you have with people the more negative your attitude will be.
Education
This can apply to both formal and informal education. Your teachers and the knowledge that you gain through your education can have an impact on your life. Miss Hawley, my English teacher at school, was so passionate about the subject that it gave me a very positive experience of English during my school days and made me have a great love for reading books and poems, and for watching live performances of Shakespeare plays. In fact it gave me a very positive attitude towards many aspects of English as a subject.
Absence Of Negativity
However, an absence of negativity alone does not make you a positive person. People with a positive attitude also possess certain personality traits. They are caring, confident, humble and patient, and have high expectations not only for themselves but also for others. They focus on positive outcomes rather than dwelling on negative ones.
If you are naturally a negative person you may find it hard to make the change to being positive all the time. If that is the case it may be easier for you to try to be less negative overall than to try and force yourself to remain positive constantly. In order to do this you first have to be aware of the thoughts you are having and whether they are positive or negative.
It's Never Too Late!
Has anyone ever told you that you are not clever enough to be successful? That you are too old or that you don’t possess the right skills to succeed? That you are not worthy of success? Whatever you may have been told or whatever you believe, it doesn’t mean that it’s true? It’s never too late, and you can always learn new skills, no matter how old you are.
Not all of the successful business men and women of today are University graduates that have come from rich families. Some have come from quite meagre beginnings and have applied a positive attitude to their work in order to become the successful person they are today.
Hopefully you will now see how you can benefit if you develop an attitude for altitude and change your life.
